Give Anchorage 2 nights as a gear-up base for Southcentral Alaska, not as the trip itself: downtown walkable, everything else needs a car.
Anchorage is Alaska's largest city and its transport hub — a real city with freeways and malls, not a postcard. Most travellers use it to land, buy or rent gear, sleep two nights, then drive south to the Kenai Peninsula or north to Denali. The setting is the draw: Chugach State Park starts at the city's edge and the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail runs from downtown.

Get around
Downtown is walkable; the rest of the city is spread out and not walkable. People Mover buses cost $2 a ride and $5 a day, with route 40 linking the airport and downtown. A car is the practical choice for anything outside downtown — book it months ahead for June–August, when agencies sell out and rates can pass $200 a day for a large vehicle. The Alaska Railroad depot is downtown at 411 W 1st Ave.

Scams and watch-outs
- Summer rental cars sell out mid-June to end of August; reserve early and check your flight lands before the rental desk closes (most shut between 2AM and 3AM).
- Winter roads carry black ice and stud damage; keep extra following distance and headlights on — the Seward Highway south of town requires headlights at all times.
- Spenard Road at night is a red-light district; stay alert and pick your block.
- Downtown is compact and busy in summer with cruise passengers; the city itself is not the Alaska most people picture.
Anchorage is a normal US city with normal city crime — downtown is fine by day and busy in summer, but avoid walking Spenard Road late at night and lock your car. The bigger risks are winter driving, black ice and the distance to help outside town.
