Iskenderun is a Mediterranean port and industrial city in Hatay, 45 km from Antakya over the Belen pass. It is named for Alexander the Great and was Alexandretta under French Syria until 1938. The February 2023 earthquake wrecked the port, the bus station and several landmarks, and recovery is ongoing, so treat it as a short coastal pause rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around

Dolmuş minibuses run the main streets and out to villages; ask your hotel which route passes your stop. The centre is walkable along Atatürk Bulvarı. Trains are suspended long-term because of engineering works around Adana, and no ferries sail since the port was wrecked in 2023.

The city is generally calm for travellers, but the 2023 earthquake left damaged buildings and makeshift infrastructure: avoid cordoned structures, confirm your hotel is operating, and keep 112 saved.

  • The bus station (Otogarı) on Sanayi Cd has only makeshift facilities; confirm your departure point with the operator.
  • No trains and no ferries: road is the only practical way in and out.
