Jerez de Garcia SalinasJerez de García Salinas

Go for one night as a Zacatecas side trip: walk the plaza and churches in half a day, or time it for the spring fair.

Jerez is a Pueblo Mágico of about 43,000 people in a flat valley 57 km south of Zacatecas, known for tostadas, tamborazo band music and a compact colonial centre you can cross on foot in 20 minutes. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one-night add-on to the Zacatecas guide, not a base of its own. The spring fair is the one time it becomes a destination in its own right.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
  • Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.
  • Mexico ↗Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water and ice from reliable places.
  • Mexico ↗Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) pay the state VISITAX online at visitax.gob.mx only; lookalike sites add fees.

Arrive & move

Getting around

The centre is flat and grid-like, so walk it: plaza, church, theatre and market are all within about 15 minutes of each other. Taxis wait at the plaza and fares are low; agree the price before you get in. Streets are mostly one-way if you drive. The town sits near 2,000 m, so take the first hour slowly.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Zacatecas

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Direct bus from the Jerez central camionera, or 57 km (35 mi) by car on the highway

The obvious pairing: sleep in Zacatecas, day-trip here, or the reverse.

Fresnillo

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Bus from the Jerez central camionera

Regional mining town; go for the connection, not the sights.

Sombrerete

overnight

Door to door: 2–3 h

Bus or car north via Fresnillo

Another Pueblo Mágico; too far for a comfortable return day.

Jalpa

caution

Door to door: About 1.5–2 h

Bus or car south

Small town; check bus times before committing.

Teúl

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Car or bus via the Zacatecas road

Check services; limited public transport.

Pinos

caution

Door to door: About 2 h

Car or bus east

Pueblo Mágico with a mining past; check connections.

Nochistlán

overnight

Door to door: About 2.5 h

Car or bus south-west

Check road and bus conditions; better with your own car.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Zona Centro around the plaza

Walk to every sight; historic hotels and the market on foot. Best for one night without a car.

Banrural / highway strip

Modern motels near the bus station and Pemex, cheaper and easier to park; 15–20 min walk to the plaza.

Watch out

Safety

A small, walkable town that feels calm by day and early evening. The real risks are the altitude, one-way streets if you drive, and the spring fair when 40,000+ visitors arrive: keep cash separate, watch your bag in crowds, and use 911 for anything urgent.
  • Many businesses close all or part of Saturday.
  • Most sights keep six-day weeks and shut on Saturdays and public holidays: check before you plan a Saturday.
  • Holy Saturday draws tens of thousands for the Burning of Judas and the spring fair: book beds weeks ahead or avoid the date.
  • Altitude is about 2,000 m; hydrate and ease into the first day.
  • No ATM at the bus station: bring cash from Zacatecas.
