Fort Augustus is a small Highland village at the south end of Loch Ness, where the Caledonian Canal climbs through five locks on its way to Loch Oich. It sits on the A82 midway between Fort William and Inverness, so it works as a stop on a Great Glen drive or as a quiet base for Loch Ness, Glen Affric and the glens around it. There is no railway station and no airport; you arrive by car, coach or bike.

Getting around

The village is walkable in 20 minutes; the canal towpath and the Great Glen Way run through it. For anything beyond the village you need a car, a bike or the Citylink 919 coach, which stops at the Medical Centre south of the river and by the car park north of the bridge. Buses to Skye do not come through here: change at Drumnadrochit or Invergarry.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a village of its size: the real risks are the A82 road, midges, wet rock on the Great Glen Way and cold water in Loch Ness. Tell someone your route if you walk the lochside paths.
  • Midges are worst on still, damp evenings from June to August; take repellent and cover up at dusk.
  • Many hotels, cafés and the Caledonian Hotel bar close or cut hours from November to March: check before you book a winter night.
  • The A82 is a single carriageway with lorries and tourist traffic; drive it in daylight if you can.
  • Mobile signal is patchy: 4G from EE, O2 and Vodafone, weaker on Three, and no 5G in the village.
  • Boat trips and the Loch Ness Marathon weekend sell out: book ahead.
