Vatican City is the world's smallest sovereign state, wrapped inside Rome, and it holds more art per square metre than most countries. Almost every visitor does it as a half-day or full-day block from a Rome hotel: the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel on one ticket, St Peter's Basilica free next door, and the square open around the clock. Two nights based in Rome's Prati or Borgo districts is the practical answer; the Vatican itself has no accommodation for tourists.

Watch out
Safety
- Dress code at St Peter's: no very short shorts or skirts and no sleeveless tops; cover-ups are offered at the door.
- Touts near Ottaviano station may claim the basilica is closed today — it usually is not; walk to the entrance and check.
- Pickpockets work bus 64 and the crowded square; keep bags in front.
- Wednesday mornings: the basilica closes for the papal audience, so plan the Museums that morning instead.
- The dome climb's last stretch is a narrow spiral staircase; not for claustrophobia.
