Civitavecchia is Rome's ferry port and cruise terminal, 60–80 minutes by regional train from Rome Termini. Almost everyone here is boarding a ship, leaving one, or passing through on the FL5 line toward Cerveteri and Tarquinia. The old town is small, the seafront is walkable, and the useful sights — the Michelangelo fortress, the cathedral, the archaeological museum — fit into half a day. Stay one night if your ferry or cruise leaves early; otherwise sleep in Rome and come out on the day.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: station to port entrance is about 10 minutes along the seafront. Regional FL5 trains run to Rome Termini (60–80 min) and north to Cerveteri and Tarquinia. Local buses cover the outer districts; taxis wait at the station and the port. For the Terme Taurine, about an hour on foot north of the harbour, check whether the seasonal shuttle is running.

- Cruise shuttles drop you at the port pedestrian entrance; the station is a further 10-minute walk, so allow time with luggage.
- On commuter trains, keep bags with you: the centre section is a grab-and-run spot at station stops.
- Ferry and cruise timetables change by season — confirm your sailing and check-in time with the operator, not a third party.
- In July and August the seafront and market street are packed when ships are in; go early for the fortress and museum.
