Half a day for the Oreshek Fortress and the town centre; skip if you cannot reach the island (May–October only).

Shlisselburg is a small town on Lake Ladoga at the head of the Neva River, known for the Oreshek Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage). The fortress was built in 1323 and changed hands between Russia and Sweden. Most visitors come for the fortress museum and the short ferry ride. The town itself is compact and can be seen in a few hours.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Russia ↗Check your own government travel advice for Russia before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Russia ↗Direct flights from much of Europe and North America are suspended; no independent tourist route is documented here.
  • Russia ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Russia before you rely on it.

Getting around

The town is walkable. Ferries to the fortress run every 10–15 min from the pier (May–October). From St Petersburg: take a train from Moskovsky or Ladozhsky station to Petrokrepost station, then a ferry; or a marshrutka from the Obvodny Kanal area (about 1.5 h).

Watch out

Safety

Shlisselburg is a quiet town with low crime. The main risk is missing the last ferry from the fortress island. In winter, the island is closed.
  • Fortress island is only accessible May–October; check the ferry schedule.
  • No ATM in the town centre; bring cash.
  • Last ferry back from the fortress: ask at the pier; usually around 18:00.
