Shlisselburg is a small town on Lake Ladoga at the head of the Neva River, known for the Oreshek Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage). The fortress was built in 1323 and changed hands between Russia and Sweden. Most visitors come for the fortress museum and the short ferry ride. The town itself is compact and can be seen in a few hours.

The town is walkable. Ferries to the fortress run every 10–15 min from the pier (May–October). From St Petersburg: take a train from Moskovsky or Ladozhsky station to Petrokrepost station, then a ferry; or a marshrutka from the Obvodny Kanal area (about 1.5 h).
