Xicotepec is a small mountain town in the Sierra Norte of Puebla, about 3.5 h by bus from Mexico City, and one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos. It is known for coffee, a flower-filled zócalo, the Casa Carranza museum and a hilltop cross reached by 746 steps. Most travellers pass through on the way between Mexico City and the Gulf coast, or use it as a quiet weekend from Puebla.

Getting around

The centre is small and walkable. Taxis and local colectivos cover the Cruz Celestial, the Virgen de Guadalupe monument and outlying hotels; agree the fare before you get in. No central bus station: each company runs its own terminal on MEX 130.

Safety

Xicotepec is a small town and generally calm for visitors; the real risks are mountain-road driving, sudden rain and unlit steps on the Cruz Celestial climb. Use 911 for emergencies and 078 for tourist help.
  • Rain arrives fast and often, June–October especially; carry a light rain jacket.
  • The Cruz Celestial climb is 746 steps on a dirt road: go in the morning, bring water.
  • Bus terminals sit on the highway edge of town, not the centre; budget a taxi for arrival and departure.
  • Some smaller hotels and cafés take cash only; keep pesos on you.
