  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Cochrane is a town of about 32,000 people 30 km northwest of Calgary on Highway 1A, where it meets the Cowboy Trail (Highway 22). It is a half-day stop for ice cream, coffee and western-style Main Street, plus a base for the Bow River valley, the 7% hill climb and paragliding. Most travellers see it as a Calgary day trip; a night here buys a quieter, cheaper bed than Banff or Canmore.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights and the campground sit outside the walkable core. Cochrane On-demand Local Transit (COLT) runs app- or phone-booked buses at fixed stops with no fixed routes or schedules, $2.50 a ride (check). The town has about 30 km of pathways for walking and cycling, and the hill is a known local climb.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 40 min

Car on Crowchild Trail / Highway 1A, about 30 km

The default pairing: sleep in Calgary, come out for a half-day, or the reverse.

Bragg Creek

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Highway 22 south, then Highway 66 west

Foothills hamlet for a meal and trailheads; pairs with a Cochrane morning.

Diamond Valley

go

Door to door: About 45–55 min

Highway 22 south through Turner Valley and Black Diamond

Cowboy Trail towns; a full day if you add a hike.

Door to door: About 1 h to Canmore, 1.5 h to Banff

Highway 1A west to Canmore, then Highway 1

Too far for a comfortable return day from Cochrane; sleep in the mountains.

Watch out

Safety

A safe small town; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 1A and 22, wildlife on the road at dusk, and cold-weather exposure on the trails. 911 covers everything.
  • No fixed-route public bus from Calgary or YYC: without a car you are on a booked shuttle or taxi (check).
  • COLT must be ordered in advance by app, web or phone; it is not a turn-up-and-ride service.
  • Winter driving on Highway 1A and Highway 22: black ice, snow and wildlife on the road at dusk.
  • Summer weekends fill the campground and the ice cream line; go before noon.
