Barahona
Spend 1–2 days in Barahona to see the town beach, Malecon and cheap bars; easy day‑trip from Santo Domingo or brief base before heading south.
Barahona is a remote, low‑key town in the southern Dominican Republic. Its main attractions are the town beach, the Malecon promenade and a lively bar scene. The town is cheap, walkable and easy to get around by motoconcho (25 DOP). One to two days are enough to soak up the atmosphere before moving on to other southern destinations.

- Caribbean ↗Several islands (Turks and Caicos above all, also the Bahamas and Jamaica) jail visitors for a single stray bullet or cartridge in their luggage; empty every bag and pocket before you pack.
- Caribbean ↗From August to October keep a free last day before your flight home and check the national hurricane centre daily; airports close when a named storm approaches.
- Caribbean ↗Wearing camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in several islands, including Barbados, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenada, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica; leave it at home, children's clothes included.
- Dominican Republic ↗Fill in the free e-Ticket form on the official migration site (eticket.migracion.gob.do) for arrival and departure; ignore sites that charge for it.
- Dominican Republic ↗The land border with Haiti is not a tourist route: do not plan overland travel into Haiti.
- Dominican Republic ↗Avoid driving at night outside cities: unlit roads, motorbikes without lights and animals make it the main risk.
