Constanza

Half a day for the waterfall and the viewpoint, or one full day if you add the Ebano Verde reserve. Not a base — pass through on a Western Cibao road trip.

Constanza is the Dominican Republic's agricultural highland town, 1,200 m up in the Cordillera Central. It sees almost no international tourism. The draw is the cool mountain air, a 35-minute hike to Aguas Blancas waterfall, and the Divino Niño monument with valley views. Most travellers use it as a lunch stop or a one-night breather between Santiago and the south coast.

  • Caribbean ↗Several islands (Turks and Caicos above all, also the Bahamas and Jamaica) jail visitors for a single stray bullet or cartridge in their luggage; empty every bag and pocket before you pack.
  • Caribbean ↗From August to October keep a free last day before your flight home and check the national hurricane centre daily; airports close when a named storm approaches.
  • Caribbean ↗Wearing camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in several islands, including Barbados, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenada, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica; leave it at home, children's clothes included.
  • Dominican Republic ↗Fill in the free e-Ticket form on the official migration site (eticket.migracion.gob.do) for arrival and departure; ignore sites that charge for it.
  • Dominican Republic ↗The land border with Haiti is not a tourist route: do not plan overland travel into Haiti.
  • Dominican Republic ↗Avoid driving at night outside cities: unlit roads, motorbikes without lights and animals make it the main risk.

Watch out

Safety

Constanza is one of the safest towns in the Dominican Republic. The main risk is road conditions in rain: landslides and potholes on the mountain roads. Keep valuables out of sight and avoid walking alone after dark on unlit streets.
  • Rainy season (May–Nov) can make the road to Aguas Blancas slippery; check conditions locally.
  • No ATM in town? — bring enough cash from Santiago or Santo Domingo.
  • Constanza Airport has limited scheduled flights; verify before planning around it.
