Major city · Canada
Dryden
One night is enough: Dryden is a Trans-Canada Highway stop between Kenora (1 h 45 min) and Thunder Bay (3 h 45 min), not a destination on its own.
Dryden is Ontario's smallest incorporated city, on the north shore of Wabigoon Lake about 140 km east of Kenora. It grew as a paper-mill town from 1910 to 2008 and now works as a highway and rail break, with fishing, hunting and lake country around it. The town itself is small: a museum, a beach, a ski hill and a moose statue at the visitor centre. Most travellers sleep one night and drive on.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: the town is spread along Highway 17 and the lake camps are 15–20 km out. Enterprise and National have hire cars in town, and George's Taxi covers short trips. Kasper Bus and Ontario Northland stop in Dryden on the Winnipeg–Sioux Lookout run; Via Rail's The Canadian stops at Richan, 25 km north.

Day-trips
Blue Lake Provincial Park
goDoor to door: About 30–40 min

Hiking trails, beach and a campground; day-use needs a permit in season.
Aaron Provincial Park
goDoor to door: About 25 min
Drive east on Highway 17 to Thunder Lake
Small park on Thunder Lake, good for a swim or a short walk.
Kenora
goDoor to door: 1 h 45 min by bus, about 1 h 30 min by car
Highway 17 west, or Kasper Bus / Ontario Northland
Bigger town with more food and lake access; Blue Lake is roughly halfway.

cautionDoor to door: About 1 h 15 min by bus
Highway 17 east then Highway 72 north, or bus
Worth it only if you are heading north or catching the train.
Red Lake
overnightDoor to door: About 2 h 30 min by car
Highway 17 east then Highway 105 north
Gateway to Pimachiowin Aki; too far for a comfortable return day.
Thunder Bay
overnightDoor to door: 3 h 45 min by bus
Highway 17 east
The region's largest city; stop there rather than day-tripping.
