Lezhë is a small north-Albanian town of about 15,500 people, 50 km north of Tirana and 30 km south of Shkodër on the SH1 motorway. Its draw is a hilltop castle with a wide coastal view, the Skanderbeg memorial, and the beach village of Shëngjin 8 km away. Most travellers pass through in half a day or sleep one night; the town itself is quiet and cheap, and the coast is where the beds are.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: bus station, memorial, Lissos ruins and the castle stairs are within about 15 minutes on foot. For Shëngjin and Tale take a furgon or taxi from the bus station square. Buses and furgons to Tirana, Shkodër, Durrës and Rrëshen leave from the same small square; furgons to Rrëshen and Laç leave from the town centre. A car helps for the lagoon, Tale and the Mirdita villages.

Watch out

Safety

Lezhë is a low-crime town and normal precautions are enough. The real risks are unlit roads and pavements after dark, stray dogs in the countryside, and swimming outside marked areas on the coast.
  • Castle opening hours and the small entry fee change by season: check locally before walking up.
  • The Skanderbeg memorial has been closed to entry at times; you may only see it from outside.
  • The Lissos ruins are unfenced and unguarded: watch your footing on loose stone.
  • Beach areas thin out outside Jul–Aug; some hotels and restaurants close in winter.
  • The daily Shkodër–Durrës train is unreliable and its timetable is not fixed: do not build a plan on it.
