ZhytomyrЖитомир

Give Zhytomyr one full day from Kyiv (2 h by car, about 2 h 30 min by bus) or one night: the centre is walkable in half a day and the rest is museums.

Zhytomyr is a 270,000-person regional capital 150 km west of Kyiv, on the Teteriv river. Its draw is a compact old centre of 19th-century churches, a strong space museum tied to rocket designer Sergei Korolyov, and Radomyshl Castle 70 km northeast. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Kyiv or a stop on the road to Berdychiv and Vinnytsia.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Ukraine ↗Check your own government travel advice for Ukraine before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Ukraine ↗Airspace is closed; entry is by rail or road from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania or Moldova, with long queues at busy crossings.
  • Ukraine ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Ukraine before you rely on it.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Castle Hill, Sobornyi square and the main museums sit within about 2 km. For longer hops use marshrutkas, buses, one tram line and trolleybuses (single ride ₴14 marshrutka/bus, ₴10 tram/trolleybus, 2026 estimate). Bolt, Uklon and Uber operate; a cross-town taxi is usually ₴100–200.

Watch out

Safety

A normal Ukrainian regional city away from the front, but the national risk picture applies: check your government's advice, keep the air-raid app on, and treat unlit side streets at night with care.
  • Air-raid alerts are possible anywhere in Ukraine: follow the alert app and go to a shelter when one sounds.
  • Check your government's travel advice before booking; this page does not plan around it.
  • Some museums and churches keep irregular wartime hours: confirm before you travel.
  • Sidewalks and crossings are uneven and poorly lit at night; carry a light.
  • Card payment is common in the centre but keep cash for buses, markets and smaller museums.
