Santillana del Mar is a small Cantabrian village of honey-stone houses and cobbled alleys, 24 km west of Santander, and the gateway to the Altamira cave museum. The centre is traffic-restricted and walkable in an afternoon; most travellers sleep one night, see Altamira, then move on to Comillas or San Vicente de la Barquera. It is a stop, not a base.

Getting around
Walk. The centre is traffic-restricted and small; from the bus stop on Av de Dorat it is about 400 m west to the foot of Santo Domingo alley, which leads into the spine of the village. A car is only useful for Altamira, the beaches and the coast villages.
