Santillana del Mar
Give Santillana one night, not three: the medieval core is 90 minutes on foot, and the real reason to stay is Altamira and the coast.
Santillana del Mar is a small Cantabrian village of honey-stone houses and cobbled alleys, 24 km west of Santander, and the gateway to the Altamira cave museum. The centre is traffic-restricted and walkable in an afternoon; most travellers sleep one night, see Altamira, then move on to Comillas or San Vicente de la Barquera. It is a stop, not a base.

Get around
Walk. The centre is traffic-restricted and small; from the bus stop on Av de Dorat it is about 400 m west to the foot of Santo Domingo alley, which leads into the spine of the village. A car is only useful for Altamira, the beaches and the coast villages.

- Altamira entry is by timed ticket and the on-site queue can run to hours: book the official slot before you travel.
- The Altamira cave itself is closed; you tour the replica and museum, 2 km west of the village.
- Tour buses fill the alleys roughly 11:00–16:00 in summer: go early or after 17:00.
- Palacio de Velarde's immersive show is Spanish-only with no subtitles: skip it if you are not fluent.
- Many restaurants close one or two days a week outside summer: check the day's board before you commit.
Very safe. The real risks are wet cobbles, tour-bus crowds in the alleys and Atlantic rain that arrives without warning: carry a shell layer even in July.
