Enez is a small Aegean town at the mouth of the Meriç (Maritsa) river, which is also the Greek border. It was the ancient port of Ainos and later a garrison town closed to foreigners until the 2000s. Today it is a low-key summer base: a castle on the ridge, three separate beach strips, a bird-rich delta and no border crossing. It is a dead end by road, so you come here on purpose.

Getting around

The town straggles over about 5 km in three parts. Dolmuşes link the centre, harbour and Altınkum every couple of hours; hitchhiking also works. A car makes the castle, beaches and Lake Gala much easier. Distances are short but not walkable in summer heat with bags.

Watch out

Safety

Quiet and low-crime, but the border is the real risk: stay out of the river and restricted zones, and expect mosquitoes in summer.
  • No border crossing to Greece: the nearest is at Ipsala near Keşan. Do not swim in the river or its main outflow, and stay out of marked restricted border zones — guards assume anyone loitering there is trying to cross.
  • Small boats arriving from Greek waters must radio the Turkish coastguard and await instructions; expect to be sent to Çanakkale to clear immigration.
  • Mosquitoes swarm around the delta swamps unless there is a breeze. No malaria risk, but bring repellent.
  • Beaches shelve steeply; watch children. Sea urchins prefer rocks but check before you plant your feet.
  • The town-centre supermarket opens only in summer for the holiday trade; Bim nearby is open daily.
