Exeter is a spread-out rural town in southwestern Rhode Island, formed in 1742 from western North Kingstown, with about 6,400 residents. There is no town centre to walk and no car rental inside the town, so it works as a half-day or one-night stop inside a South County loop: Arcadia Management Area for trails and fishing, the Mercy Brown grave at Chestnut Hill Baptist Church, and Yawgoo Valley for winter skiing or summer slides. Most travellers sleep in Wakefield, Narragansett or North Kingstown and drive in.

Getting around

A car is the only practical way: the town is spread over rural roads with no car rental inside it and no useful bus service. Cycling is possible on the quieter back roads in daylight, but shoulders are narrow and drivers fast. Distances between the grave, Arcadia and Yawgoo are 10–20 min each by car.

Safety

Rural and low-crime; the real risks are driving the dark, deer-heavy back roads at night, ticks on Arcadia trails from spring to autumn, and thin phone signal.
  • No car rental in Exeter: collect a car at PVD or in Wakefield before you arrive.
  • Cell signal and fuel stops are sparse on the back roads; fill up on Route 2.
  • The Ladd School site is abandoned and private: view from a distance, do not enter buildings.
  • Cemetery visits: Chestnut Hill Baptist Church graveyard is an active cemetery, so keep quiet and take nothing.
