  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Narragansett is a South County beach town, not a city: a pier area with the Towers, four state and town beaches, and the fishing port of Galilee where the Block Island ferry leaves. It is 30–40 min by car from Providence and about 1.5 h from Boston. Two nights covers the beaches, Point Judith and a Block Island day; one night is enough off-season, when many places close or run limited hours.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the town is about 20 miles long and under 2 miles wide, and beaches, the pier and Galilee are spread out. Parking at state beaches is paid in season and fills quickly on summer weekends. A seasonal beach pass covers parking at state beaches; the Southern Rhode Island Trolley has linked Wakefield, the Pier and Galilee in season — confirm 2026 dates and hours before relying on it. Bikes work on Ocean Road and Boston Neck Road; rideshare is thin outside the centre.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Block Island

go

Door to door: About 1 h to the island

Block Island Ferry from Galilee; fast ferry about 30 min, traditional about 55 min

Book a morning crossing in summer; a day trip works, but one night on the island is calmer.

Wickford, Rhode Island

go

Door to door: About 40 min

Car via US-1 north, about 25–35 min

Small historic waterfront village; half a day.

Wakefield, Rhode Island

go

Door to door: About 20 min

Car or the seasonal trolley, about 10–15 min

Main Street restaurants and shops; the rainy-day fallback.

North Kingstown

caution

Door to door: About 40 min

Car via US-1 north, about 25–35 min

Wickford is the draw here; treat North Kingstown as the same run rather than a separate day.

Westerly and Watch Hill

go

Door to door: About 50 min

Car via US-1 south, about 35–45 min

Beach and village day; Watch Hill is the add-on.

South Kingstown

go

Door to door: About 25 min

Car via US-1, about 15–20 min

Inland farms, trails and the Kingston Amtrak stop.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Narragansett Pier

Walk to Town Beach, the Sea Wall and the Towers; the densest cluster of places to eat. Book early for summer weekends.

Galilee / Point Judith

Fishing-port base next to the Block Island ferry and Salty Brine and Roger Wheeler beaches; best for an early ferry.

Wakefield / South Kingstown

Inland, 10–15 min by car; more year-round rooms and restaurants, cheaper in summer.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime beach town; the real risks are rip currents and rough surf at Scarborough and Black Point, slippery rocks, summer parking tickets, and drinking on the beach where it is banned.
  • Summer weekend parking at Town Beach and Scarborough fills quickly; arrive early or use the trolley.
  • Beach parking and walk-on fees are seasonal and change year to year — check the town and state park sites before you go.
  • Point Judith Lighthouse and its buildings are closed to the public; only the grounds are open in daylight.
  • Rocks at Black Point and Camp Cronin are slippery and the water is deep and rough — do not swim there.
  • Many restaurants and seasonal businesses close or cut hours from November to March.
