Puri is a seaside pilgrimage town on the Bay of Bengal, one of the Char Dham sites and home to the Jagannath Temple in Kalinga style. Pilgrims come for darshan, everyone else for the long beach and the Sun Temple at Konark, 35 km up the coast. Two nights covers both; the town itself is small and walkable.

Getting around

Cycle rickshaws, auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws cover the town; agree the fare before you set off and confirm it twice. Motorbikes can be hired on C.T. Road if you want to ride the coast to Konark. The railway station is central, within walking distance of most hotels.

Watch out

Safety

Puri is safe for tourists by day; the real risks are the rough sea after dark, unhygienic beach food stalls, and pandas or touts extracting money. Carry small notes and keep your belongings close in budget guesthouses.
  • Do not swim after dark; the sea is rough and there are no lifeguards on the public beach.
  • Avoid the beach-side food stalls selling fish and meat kebabs — eat in hotels and restaurants instead.
  • Pandas (temple priests) press for donations; carry small notes and keep walking.
  • Keep valuables with you in cheap guesthouses; use the hotel locker.
  • Monkeys on the beach and near temples: do not feed them.
  • For anything serious, Kalinga Hospital in Bhubaneswar beats Puri's basic local hospitals.
