Chintheche

Spend 2–3 nights at a lakeside lodge for beach time and birdwatching; a half-day stop is not worth the transfer from Mzuzu or Nkhata Bay.

Chintheche is a quiet beach town on the shores of Lake Malawi, known for its white-sand coves and tropical vegetation. It works best as a slow base for swimming, kayaking and birdwatching, not as a sightseeing destination. Most travellers stay 2–3 nights at one of the two lodges, then move north or south along the lake.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • Southern Africa ↗A rental car may leave its home country only with the rental company's cross-border letter, the registration papers and paid road taxes at each post; driving into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola without them ends at the border.
  • Southern Africa ↗Across the subregion, plan every road leg to arrive before sunset: livestock, wildlife, pedestrians and unlit trucks make night driving the main cause of serious visitor accidents.
  • Malawi ↗Malawi dropped its 2024 visa waiver for most Western passports in January 2026; confirm your rule on the official Malawi immigration e-visa portal before you book, not on agent sites.

Watch out

Safety

Chintheche is safe for tourists; the main risks are swimming alone (no lifeguards) and driving after dark on the M5 road. Keep valuables in the lodge safe.
  • No ATM in Chintheche; bring enough kwacha from Mzuzu or Lilongwe.
  • Lodges are all-inclusive or half-board; check what is covered before booking.
  • Mobile reception is patchy; check with your lodge about Wi-Fi.
  • Rainy season (Dec–Mar) may close the dirt access road.
