Thaxted is a small Essex wool town of about 2,600 people, 6 miles from Stansted Airport. Its three sights — a 15th-century Guildhall, a working windmill and one of Essex's largest churches — cluster on one hill and take half a day. It works as a stop on a Saffron Walden or Stansted day, not as a base: there is one hotel and no railway station.

Walk. The Guildhall, windmill and church are within about 10 minutes of each other and of the Town Street car parks. Footpaths and lanes link the surrounding villages; a car or the 314/316 buses cover the gaps.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are unlit lanes after dark, no pavement on some village roads, and infrequent last buses.
  • No railway station in Thaxted: nearest are Elsenham, Stansted Mountfitchet, Newport and Audley End, all a short drive away.
  • The Guildhall opens only on event and exhibition days — check before you travel.
  • Windmill opening is run by volunteers and is not daily; check ahead.
  • Rural buses are infrequent, especially on Sundays; check the last return bus before you set out.
