Thredbo is a village and ski resort inside Kosciuszko National Park, at 1,380 m on the Alpine Way. It is the closest thing Australia has to an alpine village: lifts, lodges and restaurants within a 1 km walk, and a summer season of chairlift-assisted walks to the 2,228 m summit of Mount Kosciuszko. Perisher has more terrain in winter but no village life and nothing to do in summer. Most trips stay 2–3 nights in winter and 1–2 in summer; Jindabyne is cheaper but adds a 30–60 min snow commute each way.

Getting around

The village is walkable but steep, with few footpaths and icy roads in winter. Parking is scarce and overnight parking is banned unless your accommodation has its own; most people leave the car at the free Friday Flat lots and walk 15 min or take the free winter shuttle (three routes, about every 15 min). In summer, watch for mountain bikes.

Watch out

Safety

The real risks are winter driving on the Alpine Way, ice on village streets, and altitude and weather changes on the Kosciuszko walk: carry chains, wear proper boots and check the forecast before you set out.
  • Chains must be carried in winter on the Alpine Way and you must know how to fit them; signs mark the fitting bays.
  • National park entry is charged per vehicle at entrance stations: A$27 (≈ US$18) per 24 h in winter, A$16 (≈ US$11) per day in summer (2026 estimate); drive-through Alpine Way passes are free.
  • Tobogganing and snow play are banned anywhere in the resort.
  • Lift passes and lessons sell out in peak weeks: book ahead.
  • Medical help is winter and school holidays only; nearest doctors Jindabyne, nearest emergency hospital Cooma, specialists Canberra.
