Maldon

Give Maldon one full day and one night: walk the historic Main Street, ride the steam train to Castlemaine, drive up Mt Tarrengower for the view.

Maldon is a gold-rush town of about 1,500 people 140 km north-west of Melbourne, on the slopes of Mt Tarrengower. The National Trust declared it Australia's First Notable Town in 1965, and the compact centre still reads as a 19th-century streetscape. One day covers the town, the mine ruins and the lookout; a second day is for the steam railway, the wineries and the bush tracks.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable. Mt Tarrengower, the wineries and the mine reserves need a car or a bicycle. V/Line coaches between Bendigo and Ballarat stop outside the post office; the Victorian Goldfields Railway links Maldon with Castlemaine by steam train on running days.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet country town and safe for visitors. The real risks are summer fire weather, wildlife on the roads at dawn and dusk, and long gaps between fuel and phone signal.
  • Summer is hot and dry: total fire bans close forest tracks and the Mt Tarrengower road, so check the CFA and VicEmergency warnings before you drive out.
  • Many shops, cafés and the railway run limited days: check opening times and the railway timetable before you commit a day.
  • Fuel and groceries are limited; the IGA in Main Street covers essentials, but fill up in Castlemaine or Bendigo.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy on the back roads and in the bush; download maps before you leave town.
  • Kangaroos and deer on the roads at dawn and dusk: slow down.
