Maldon
Give Maldon one full day and one night: walk the historic Main Street, ride the steam train to Castlemaine, drive up Mt Tarrengower for the view.
Maldon is a gold-rush town of about 1,500 people 140 km north-west of Melbourne, on the slopes of Mt Tarrengower. The National Trust declared it Australia's First Notable Town in 1965, and the compact centre still reads as a 19th-century streetscape. One day covers the town, the mine ruins and the lookout; a second day is for the steam railway, the wineries and the bush tracks.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer is hot and dry: total fire bans close forest tracks and the Mt Tarrengower road, so check the CFA and VicEmergency warnings before you drive out.
- Many shops, cafés and the railway run limited days: check opening times and the railway timetable before you commit a day.
- Fuel and groceries are limited; the IGA in Main Street covers essentials, but fill up in Castlemaine or Bendigo.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the back roads and in the bush; download maps before you leave town.
- Kangaroos and deer on the roads at dawn and dusk: slow down.
A small, quiet country town and safe for visitors. The real risks are summer fire weather, wildlife on the roads at dawn and dusk, and long gaps between fuel and phone signal.
