Essen is the Ruhr's industrial-heritage city: the Zollverein coal complex is a UNESCO site with museums, and Museum Folkwang holds a serious art collection with free permanent entry. The centre is compact and walkable from the station, while the green south (Baldeneysee, Werden, Kettwig) needs a tram or S-Bahn. Most travellers see the core in a day and use Essen as a base for Dortmund, Bochum and Duisburg.

Buy at machines, kiosks or the app; boarding without a valid ticket risks a €60 penalty. Taxis start at €4.40 and run about €2.50/km — a 10 km trip is roughly €30.
