Essen
Give Essen one full day for Zeche Zollverein and Museum Folkwang; add a second only if you want Baldeneysee or Kettwig. Base here for the Ruhr.
Essen is the Ruhr's industrial-heritage city: the Zollverein coal complex is a UNESCO site with museums, and Museum Folkwang holds a serious art collection with free permanent entry. The centre is compact and walkable from the station, while the green south (Baldeneysee, Werden, Kettwig) needs a tram or S-Bahn. Most travellers see the core in a day and use Essen as a base for Dortmund, Bochum and Duisburg.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- You must have a valid ticket before boarding; inspectors fine €60 on the spot.
- Some tram stops still lack platforms — board from the street and watch passing cars.
- Villa Hügel opening hours change; check the official site before you go.
- Grugabad pool requires valid ID or passport for anyone over 14.
- Off-peak, some bus routes are replaced by a book-ahead Taxibus (TB).
Essen is a normal German big city: the centre and Rüttenscheid are fine by day and evening. Watch pickpockets around the station and on crowded U-Bahn, and keep to lit streets near the Hbf after midnight.
