Chapala is a small lakeside town in Jalisco, about an hour by bus from Guadalajara, on Mexico's largest lake. It is a retirement and weekend town rather than a resort: the draw is the malecón, cheap lakefront seafood, a mild climate and easy access to Ajijic. Two nights covers it; one night is enough if you only want the promenade and a meal.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 min end to end, but pavements are narrow and cobbled. Local buses and taxis run along the shore to Ajijic and Jocotepec; taxis are cheap for short hops. For Guadalajara, the direct bus leaves about hourly from the Chapala bus station.

Watch out

Safety

Chapala is generally calm and safe for tourists by day and early evening. Use normal care after dark away from the malecón, keep to licensed taxis or ride-hail, and treat the lake as scenery rather than a swimming spot.
  • Weekends and Mexican holidays fill the malecón restaurants: reserve or eat early.
  • June–September afternoons bring heavy rain; plan indoor or travel time then.
  • Lake water is not for swimming at the town beaches; use a pool.
  • Some malecón bars do not post prices: ask the total before ordering.
