St. Pölten
Skip as a base unless you have a reason: 30 min from Vienna by rail, half a day for the museums and Klangturm, then move on.
St. Pölten is Lower Austria's capital and a rail junction on the Vienna–Linz line, not a sightseeing city. Its draw is a compact Kulturbezirk (museum, concert hall, sound tower), a lake for summer swimming and fast trains to Vienna, Melk and the Wachau. Most travellers pass through; a half day or one night is enough.

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. LUP city buses cover the outer districts; Nextbike rental bikes are free for the first half hour. Trains from the Hauptbahnhof reach Vienna in about 30 min and Melk in about 25 min.
