Albany is Western Australia's oldest European settlement, founded in 1826 on Princess Royal Harbour, 400 km south of Perth. It pairs a compact historic town with a wild Southern Ocean coast: the National ANZAC Centre, the old whaling station and Torndirrup National Park each take half a day. You need a car for the coast; the centre itself is walkable.

A car is the practical choice: the whaling station and Torndirrup are 15–25 min out of town with no useful bus. Central Albany, the historic precinct and the port are walkable. A limited town bus (Love's Bus Service) serves Middleton Beach, Emu Point and Little Grove; check the PTA regional timetable. Off-road cycleways link the centre, Middleton Beach and Emu Point.
