Raahe is a small west-coast town 74 km south of Oulu, built on 17th-century trade and later steel. Its draw is Old Raahe, a grid of wooden houses around one of Finland's best-preserved empire-style market squares, plus a compact sea museum. Two to four hours covers the centre on foot; one night lets you add the archipelago view from Tornitalo and a pesäpallo match in summer. There is no passenger railway station.

The centre is small enough to walk; Old Raahe, the church and the sea museum are all within about 15 minutes on foot. Local buses run on a limited timetable — use the Matkahuolto route planner. Taxis: Raahen Taksiasema at the bus station, plus the Valopilkku, 02 Taksi and Otaxi apps.

Safety

Raahe is a low-crime small town; the real risks are winter ice on pavements, thin late-night bus service and unlit shore paths after dark. Emergency number 112.
  • No passenger trains: Ruukki (33 km (21 mi)) and Vihanti (37 km (23 mi)) are the nearest stations on the Helsinki–Oulu line, then a bus or taxi.
  • Buses on the Oulu–Kokkola corridor stop in Raahe but frequencies are thin; check times before you commit.
  • Winter pavements and cycle paths are icy; headlights are required at all times when driving.
  • The steel mill is a working industrial site; view it from outside unless you confirm visitor access.
