Raahe (Brahestad in Swedish)
Give Raahe one night or a half-day stop on the E8 between Oulu and Kokkola: the wooden old town and sea museum are the reason, not the steel mill.
Raahe is a small west-coast town 74 km south of Oulu, built on 17th-century trade and later steel. Its draw is Old Raahe, a grid of wooden houses around one of Finland's best-preserved empire-style market squares, plus a compact sea museum. Two to four hours covers the centre on foot; one night lets you add the archipelago view from Tornitalo and a pesäpallo match in summer. There is no passenger railway station.

Get around

- Winter pavements and cycle paths are icy; headlights are required at all times when driving.
- The steel mill is a working industrial site; view it from outside unless you confirm visitor access.
