Bhopal is Madhya Pradesh's capital and a mid-sized city built around two lakes, with a Mughal-era old town on one side and planned New Bhopal on the other. Most travellers use it as a base for the UNESCO sites at Sanchi and Bhimbetka, 45–46 km away. Two nights covers the city and one day trip; three if you add both.

Getting around

Autos, app cabs (Ola, Uber) and city buses cover the centre; the Star-bus service is the safest public option. Distances between the lakes, the museums and the old city are 5–10 km, so budget for cabs rather than walking. A full-day hired car with driver is the practical choice for Sanchi or Bhimbetka.

Old Bhopal (Koh-e-Fiza, Hamidia Road)

Around the mosques, chowk bazaar and the heritage palace hotels. Livelier and dustier; narrow lanes.

Watch out

Safety

Bhopal is generally safe for tourists by day; the real risks are heat, traffic, monsoon flooding and unofficial entry to the abandoned Union Carbide site. Use app cabs after dark and keep valuables out of sight in the old city.
  • Summer heat: April–June regularly tops 40°C; plan sights before 11:00 and after 16:00.
  • Monsoon July–September brings 300 mm+ months and flooded lanes; the lakes rise.
  • The abandoned Union Carbide plant is a contaminated site, not a formal attraction: entry is unofficial and the area is unsafe — do not go inside.
  • Touts at the railway stations and around the old city; agree auto fares or use the meter/app before you get in.
  • Drink sealed bottled water only; street juice and cut fruit are a common cause of upset stomachs.
