Skibbereen is a market town of about 2,900 people on the River Ilen, 85 km west of Cork on the N71. It was one of the hardest-hit places in the Great Famine of 1845–52, and that history is the reason to stop rather than drive past. The town itself is small; the value is as a base for Lough Hyne, the beaches and the islands of Roaringwater Bay. Without a car most of it is out of reach.

Getting around

You need a car. Sights are 1–7 km out and buses are thin. Bus Éireann 237 runs from Cork via Clonakilty every two hours, about 1 h 45 min, then branches to Baltimore and to Schull. Bus 270 links Killarney, Kenmare, Glengarriff and Bantry. Taxis: West Cork Cabs and Dolphin Taxis (check current numbers).

Watch out

Safety

Skibbereen is a small, low-crime town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are rural roads, weather that turns in an hour, and cold water at Lough Hyne and the islands.
  • Many restaurants and the Heritage Centre keep short, seasonal hours: check before you build a day around them.
  • Single-track roads and stone walls on the way to Lough Hyne and the islands; drive slowly and expect oncoming traffic.
  • Lough Hyne has no beach and the water is cold year-round; the tidal rapids are not a swimming spot for weak swimmers.
  • Village pubs may stop serving food by 20:00–21:00 outside July and August.
