Walla Walla
Give Walla Walla 2 nights if you drink wine, 1 if you don't: downtown tasting rooms are walkable, the wineries outside town need a car.
Walla Walla is a small college town in the Columbia River Plateau that turned its wheat and onion farmland into wine country: 100–120 wineries, most with tasting rooms downtown or a short drive out. Downtown is compact and walkable, the wine is the reason to come, and two nights covers the town plus a loop of rural tasting rooms. Without a car you can still fill a day on foot; with one you get the countryside.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
Downtown is walkable: no sight is more than about a 30-minute walk from Main Street. Valley Transit runs daytime local buses with free fixed routes and bike racks, with its transfer centre at 4th & Main. For the countryside wineries, Mill Creek and the Whitman Mission you want a car; four rental companies operate in town. Bicycles work well on the quiet valley roads, but expect hills.

Watch out
Safety
- Summer afternoons are hot and dry; carry water if you walk between tasting rooms.
- Rural tasting rooms often keep shorter hours or need a booking — check before driving out.
- Wine tasting plus driving does not mix: book a driver or a tour for the countryside loop.
- Winter brings snow and fog; some country roads and rural wineries close or cut hours.
- Distances between wineries look short on a map but are country-road drives, not walks.
