Walla Walla is a small college town in the Columbia River Plateau that turned its wheat and onion farmland into wine country: 100–120 wineries, most with tasting rooms downtown or a short drive out. Without a car you can still fill a day on foot; with one you get the countryside.

Get around
Downtown is walkable: no sight is more than about a 30-minute walk from Main Street. Valley Transit runs daytime local buses with free fixed routes and bike racks, with its transfer centre at 4th & Main. For the countryside wineries, Mill Creek and the Whitman Mission you want a car; four rental companies operate in town. Bicycles work well on the quiet valley roads, but expect hills.
