Merritt is a small Nicola Valley town at the junction of Highway 5 (Coquihalla) and Highway 97C, about 2.5–3 hours from Vancouver and 40–60 minutes from Kamloops. It works as a fuel-and-food stop, a cheap bed between the coast and the Interior, and a base for Nicola Lake, Monck Park and the surrounding ranch country. The downtown is compact and walkable; everything else needs a car.

Getting around

Downtown is small enough to walk; crossing from the centre to the newer north end can take up to an hour on foot. BC Transit runs local routes, some daily. A car or a good bike is recommended for anything outside town. Taxis are available; ride-hailing coverage is limited.

Safety

Merritt is a small, quiet town and feels safe by day. The real risks are on the road and in the backcountry: winter Coquihalla conditions, wildfire smoke, cold lake water and thin cell coverage outside town.
  • Wildfire smoke and campfire bans: check the provincial wildfire danger level before camping or hiking.
  • No boat or kayak rentals in town: bring your own gear or arrange it before you arrive.
  • Winter driving on the Coquihalla can close or require chains: check DriveBC before you set out.
  • Cell coverage thins out on the back roads and around the lakes.
