Baddeck is a village of about 800 people on Bras d'Or Lake, at the start and end of the 300 km Cabot Trail loop on Highway 105. It is a service centre for a sparsely populated county, with more hotel rooms than residents, and most of what you do is on foot along Chebucto Street and Shore Road. Use it as a base for the trail and the Bell site, not as a destination in itself.

Getting around

The village is compact: Chebucto Street and Shore Road hold nearly everything and are walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. A car is needed for the Cabot Trail, the Bell site if you skip the walk, and out-of-town lodgings. No local bus service; taxis are limited, so book ahead for early departures.

Watch out

Safety

Baddeck is a small, low-crime village and safe for tourists. The real risks are the short season, wildlife on the highway at dusk, and cold lake water: wear a life jacket on the water and drive the Cabot Trail in daylight.
  • Season is short: many hotels, restaurants and tours run May–Oct only, so book summer beds weeks ahead.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on parts of the Cabot Trail; download offline maps before you drive.
  • Moose and deer on Highway 105 and the Cabot Trail at dusk and dawn.
  • Restaurant kitchens in the village close early outside July–August; check hours before a late arrival.
