Kudus

Kudus is a small Central Java city with two reasons to stop: the Menara Kudus Mosque, a 16th-century brick minaret that mixes Hindu-Javanese carving with Islamic use, and the kretek cigarette industry that made the town rich. Sights are close together and cheap; the nearest airport and train station are in Semarang, 1–2 h west. It works as one night between Jepara and Rembang, not as a base.

Get around
Rail access is via Semarang (Tawang station), 1–2 h west; Kudus itself has no station. Local bus coverage is limited — check current routes. Ride-hailing apps (Gojek, Grab) cover cars and ojek (motorcycle taxis); short hops across the centre cost a few thousand rupiah. For Jepara, Rembang, Pati or Semarang, buses and travel (shared minivan) shuttles run from the terminals on the ring road — check departure times locally.
