Casamassima is a small town in the province of Bari whose medieval core is painted sky-blue — locally called the Paese Azzurro, the Blue Town — after a 17th-century vow to the Virgin Mary of Constantinople during a plague. The old centre is compact and walkable in an hour or two; the modern town around it is ordinary. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop between Bari and the Valle d'Itria, or as a base for the Murgia towns if they have a car.

Getting around

The old town and the modern centre are 20–30 min apart on foot and both are small; you do not need a car inside Casamassima. Trains on the Bari–Putignano line (Ferrovie Sud-Est, now Ferrovie Appulo Lucane network branding — check) run roughly hourly from Bari Centrale. Validate your ticket before boarding. A car helps for the surrounding Murgia towns, which are poorly linked to each other by public transport.

Safety

Very safe for its size; the real risks are heat in July–August, uneven old-town stone underfoot, and unlit lanes after dark. Petty theft is rare but keep bags zipped in Bari, not here.
  • Validate bus and train tickets before boarding; inspectors fine on the spot.
  • Midday summer heat in the old town: the lanes are stone and shade is patchy.
  • Sunday and public-holiday evenings: many kitchens and shops shut early.
  • If you rely on trains back to Bari, check the last departure — the line is not high-frequency late at night.
