Saas-Fee is the biggest village in the Saas valley, a car-free plateau at about 1,800 m with 18 peaks above 4,000 m on the skyline and a glacier ski area that runs into summer. It has no railway and no Matterhorn, so it stays calmer than Zermatt while offering comparable skiing and hiking. Most visitors come for the mountains, not the town.

Getting around

The village is car-free and small enough to walk in 10–15 minutes end to end. Quiet electric vehicles share the lanes, so look before crossing. Free shuttle buses run to the lifts in the main season; regular PostBus services link the four valley villages, and in winter ski buses connect them to Saas-Fee.

Watch out

Safety

One of the safer Alpine resorts: the real risks are altitude, fast-changing mountain weather, quiet electric vehicles in the car-free lanes, and unmarked off-piste terrain. Tell someone your route and carry the Rega number.
  • Saas-Fee is car-free: park at the village entrance (CHF 19/day in winter, CHF 14 in summer, per the official arrival page) and continue on foot or by electric taxi.
  • The PostBus from Visp takes about 50 minutes and can fill up on Friday evenings and in peak season; take an earlier bus if you have a tight train connection.
  • Mountain weather changes fast: check lift and trail status before setting out, and carry layers even in summer.
  • The Mattmark access road and area are closed in winter because of avalanche risk.
