Truckee

Base in Truckee for 1–2 nights if you want a small historic town with Donner Lake and ski resorts 15–25 min away; skip it if you want the lake itself.

Truckee sits at 1,800 m just east of Donner Pass on I-80, 30–40 min from Reno and about 3 h from the Bay Area. It is a real town, not a resort village: one walkable main street, a rail station on the California Zephyr, and the north Tahoe ski areas and Donner Lake within a short drive. Most travellers use it for one or two nights on the way to or from the lake, or as a cheaper bed base for a ski week.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable in 15 min end to end. A free public bus links the rail station with the West Shore of Lake Tahoe and a second route runs to Incline Village, Nevada; winter ski buses connect Reno airport with the resorts. For Donner Lake, Northstar or Palisades you need a car or a resort shuttle.

Incline Village, Nevada

go

North-east lake shore; the bus is the car-free option.

I-80 east by car, or Greyhound from the Amtrak station

Casinos, airport and a bigger city; fine for an afternoon or a flight connection.

Door to door: 1 h 15 min

Watch out

Safety

Truckee is a low-crime small town; the real risks are winter driving over Donner Pass, altitude on day one, and strict drunk-driving enforcement downtown at night.
  • I-80 over Donner Pass can close in heavy snow; chain control applies and only 4WD or chained cars are allowed through.
  • Winter storms can shut the highway for hours: check Caltrans road status before driving.
  • Drunk-driving enforcement is strict and sobriety checkpoints are common; do not drive after drinking.
  • Store food in bear lockers at campgrounds and never leave food in a car.
  • Altitude is about 1,800 m: expect to feel it on the first day, drink water.
