Truckee
Base in Truckee for 1–2 nights if you want a small historic town with Donner Lake and ski resorts 15–25 min away; skip it if you want the lake itself.
Truckee sits at 1,800 m just east of Donner Pass on I-80, 30–40 min from Reno and about 3 h from the Bay Area. It is a real town, not a resort village: one walkable main street, a rail station on the California Zephyr, and the north Tahoe ski areas and Donner Lake within a short drive. Most travellers use it for one or two nights on the way to or from the lake, or as a cheaper bed base for a ski week.

Downtown is walkable in 15 min end to end.
