Lakselv is a small town of about 2,300 people at the south end of Porsangerfjorden, on the E6 between Alta and Karasjok, and the administrative centre of Porsanger. It is a practical stop for drivers and a base for fishing, the Stabbursdalen pine forest and the Stabbursnes wetland. There is no old town and no nightlife to speak of; the reason to come is the arctic landscape and the salmon river that gave the town its name.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread out and buses are few. Hertz, Avis and Lakselv Bilutleie rent from the centre. The E6 runs through town; check taxi and transfer options for Banak airport before you land.

Watch out

Safety

Lakselv is a small, low-crime town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are arctic weather, long empty roads, wildlife on the road and cold water: tell someone your route before hiking.
  • Distances are long and buses run once a day at best: check the schedule before you rely on it.
  • The Valdak Marshes part of Stabbursnes reserve is closed 10 Aug–20 Sep; camping is banned in the whole reserve and dogs must be on a leash.
  • Fishing rules in Stabbursdalen are strict: disinfect gear, pay the fee and check the current season.
  • Winter roads are icy and daylight is short; drive with lights on and plan around the dark.
