Cambridge

Base here 1–2 nights if you want a quiet Waikato stop with a car: 24 km (15 mi) from Hamilton, 45 min to Hobbiton, 1 h to Waitomo.

Cambridge is a small, tree-lined Waikato town on the Waikato River, 24 km southeast of Hamilton, split between Central Cambridge on the north bank and Leamington on the south. It works as a low-cost, low-traffic base for the middle North Island: Hobbiton at Matamata, Waitomo's caves, Hamilton and Raglan are all inside a day's drive. Without a car it is a stop, not a base.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
  • New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
  • New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to see the region; the town centre itself is walkable in 10–15 minutes. Two bridges cross the Waikato between the centre and Leamington: the narrow Victoria St bridge has width, height and weight limits, so campervans and larger vehicles must use Ferguson Bridge on Shakespeare St. InterCity coaches stop on Victoria St opposite the i-Site. Cambridge Taxis runs weekdays; book ahead.

Watch out

Safety

Cambridge is a small, low-crime town and feels safe day and night; the real risks are rural roads after dark, the narrow Victoria St bridge with a campervan, and summer sun on exposed walks.
  • Do not take a campervan over the Victoria St bridge: use Ferguson Bridge on Shakespeare St.
  • Rural roads around Maungatautari and Karāpiro are unlit and used by stock trucks; avoid driving them after dark.
  • Some GPS routing to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari sends you to the wrong entrance: set the street address, not the name.
  • Summer (Dec–Feb) can hit 25–28 °C (77–82 °F) with strong sun; carry water on any walk.
  • Beds in Cambridge fill for Karāpiro rowing and equestrian events: book ahead or sleep in Hamilton.
