Cambridge is a small, tree-lined Waikato town on the Waikato River, 24 km southeast of Hamilton, split between Central Cambridge on the north bank and Leamington on the south. It works as a low-cost, low-traffic base for the middle North Island: Hobbiton at Matamata, Waitomo's caves, Hamilton and Raglan are all inside a day's drive. Without a car it is a stop, not a base.

Get around
A car is the practical way to see the region; the town centre itself is walkable in 10–15 minutes. Two bridges cross the Waikato between the centre and Leamington: the narrow Victoria St bridge has width, height and weight limits, so campervans and larger vehicles must use Ferguson Bridge on Shakespeare St. InterCity coaches stop on Victoria St opposite the i-Site. Cambridge Taxis runs weekdays; book ahead.
