Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Beaulieu is a small New Forest village built around a single paid attraction: the National Motor Museum, Palace House and the ruins of a 1204 Cistercian abbey, all on one ticket. The village itself — mill pond, river headwaters, ponies in the street — takes an hour on foot. Most visitors come for a day and stay in Lymington, Brockenhurst or Southampton.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The estate is walkable: car park, motor museum, palace and abbey are within about 1 km, and a monorail loop links them, included in the entry ticket. Buckler's Hard is about 4 km south — drive or cycle, there is no useful bus. For the wider forest you need a car, a bike or the seasonal New Forest Tour bus.

Buckler's Hard

go

Door to door: About 15 min by car

Drive or cycle about 4 km south from Beaulieu village

Separate ticket from the Beaulieu estate. Georgian shipbuilding village on the river; hours shorten in winter.

Lymington

go

Door to door: About 20–30 min

Morebus 112, or about 15–20 min by car

Best nearby base for beds and food; Saturday market and a ferry to the Isle of Wight.

Brockenhurst

go

Door to door: About 15 min

Car, or the seasonal New Forest Tour bus

Main forest rail station; good walking and cycling straight from the village.

Southampton

caution

Door to door: About 40 min by car

Car, or bus and rail via Brockenhurst

Worth it for the city, not as a Beaulieu day trip — the transfer eats the day.

Isle of Wight

overnight

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Wightlink ferry from Lymington to Yarmouth

Crossing is short but the island needs a night of its own.

Beaulieu village

Two hotels only: the Montagu Arms on Palace Lane and the Master Builder's at Buckler's Hard. Book weeks ahead in summer.

Lymington

Brockenhurst

About 15 min by car; main New Forest rail station with London trains.

Southampton

About 30–40 min by car; cheapest beds and the widest choice if you have a car.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are ponies and donkeys on the road and in car parks (do not feed or touch them), narrow forest lanes with cyclists and walkers, and thin bus service that can strand you after the estate closes.
  • Public transport is thin: Morebus 112 to Lymington runs but is not timed around the attractions. Check times before you commit.
  • The New Forest Tour hop-on hop-off bus (Green Route) runs in high summer only — check the season dates.
  • New Forest ponies and donkeys roam the village street and car parks. Do not feed or touch them; they bite and kick, and feeding is an offence.
  • Dogs are allowed in the grounds on a lead but not inside the motor museum, Palace House, the abbey or the restaurant.
  • Some garden and riverside paths are gravel or hoggin — rough for small wheels.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Beaulieu. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep · avoid Dec–Feb (short days, some estate sites on reduced hours) · month by month →
  2. 3 airports and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 5 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contracts for SOU, BOH and LHR: last bus and rail options field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Walking cluster map for the estate: car park, motor museum, Palace House, abbey, mill pond, with step-free notes.
  3. Place pages with verified opening hours and last entry for the motor museum, Palace House, the abbey and Buckler's Hard.
  4. Rain and event fixtures (estate rallies and shows close parts of the parkland) so gates A–D can go green.
