Kintamani is the Batur caldera highland in north-east Bali: a 1,500 m rim road with volcano and lake views, the Pura Ulun Danu Batur temple, hot springs at Toya Bungkah and the pre-dawn trek up Mount Batur. It is 15°C cooler than the coast, so pack a jacket. Most travellers come as a day trip from Ubud; a single night near the lake is what makes the sunrise climb work.

Getting around
No public transport worth using: hire a car with driver, join a tour, or ride a scooter if you are confident on steep, sometimes broken mountain roads. Orange bemos run the caldera road between Penelokan and Kintamani for about Rp 10,000 a hop. The lake-edge road south through Kedisan to Abang is narrow and steep; a 4WD is better, and the loop around the base of Batur is often damaged and passable on foot only.

Watch out
Safety
- Private vehicles pay an area entry charge of about Rp 10,000 (≈ under US$1) per person; keep the ticket, it covers the whole Kintamani area and you may be asked to show it again.
- Mount Batur guides operate as an association cartel: a guide is required, roughly Rp 300,000–400,000 (≈ US$19–25), and unbooked climbers have been confronted. Book through the association office in Toya Bungkah or your hotel.
- Paths are very slippery in rain; skip the climb in the depths of the wet season.
- Souvenir hawkers here are persistent, especially at viewpoints; agree any price before you commit.
- Trunyan boat trips draw frequent complaints: fix the price and the village donation in writing before departure, or visit Tenganan instead.
- It is cold after sunset at 1,500 (≈ under US$1) m: a sweater or jacket is not optional.
