Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland is in the EU but not in the Schengen area; it sets its own entry rules and a Schengen visa is not valid for Ireland. Check Irish immigration for your passport.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland and the UK form the Common Travel Area, with no routine checks on the land border. Visitors who are not Irish or British must still meet UK rules (including the UK ETA where it applies) to enter Northern Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Driving is on the left; rural roads are narrow with hedges and few passing places.

Mallow is a market town of about 13,500 people on the Cork–Dublin and Cork–Tralee rail lines, best known for Cork Racecourse and for being the junction where Kerry-bound travellers change trains. The castle grounds, two churches and a handful of pubs fill half a day. Everything else worth seeing in north Cork — Doneraile, Buttevant, Kanturk — needs a car.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable: station to Clock House is about 500 m, and the castle grounds are a further 10 min. Cork Racecourse is about 1.5 km west of the centre and runs a free shuttle on race days. For Doneraile, Buttevant, Kanturk or Ballyhass Lakes you need a car or taxi.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 45 min

Commuter or inter-city train from Mallow, about 25 min

Trains run hourly or better; Cork needs a full day or more, so sleep there rather than day-tripping twice.

Killarneyovernight

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

Train from Mallow via Mallow–Tralee line, about 1 h 30 min

Too far for a comfortable return day; treat it as the next stop, not a day trip.

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Train to Limerick Junction, then change for Limerick city

Doable as a day out, but check the connection at Limerick Junction both ways.

Doneraile Court and Estate

caution

Door to door: About 25 min

Car or taxi via N73, about 15 km north

Guided house tours Thursday–Monday, adult €8; the parkland with red deer is free daily. No useful bus.

Buttevant and Ballybeg Priory

caution

Door to door: About 30 min

Bus or car north on N20, about 20 km

Franciscan priory ruins; the Cahirmee Horse Fair fills the village on 12 July.

Kanturk Castle

caution

Door to door: About 25 min

Car west via N72, about 15 km

Unfinished 1601 tower-house shell, free to walk around at any time; no public transport.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (Thomas Davis Street and Bank Place)

Walk to the station, pubs and restaurants; the Hibernian is the mid-range pick here.

Kennel Hill, west of the station

Quiet B&B side, 5 min walk from the platforms; best if you have an early train.

Country houses outside town

Springfort Hall (about 5 km north) and similar need a car or taxi; good for a race weekend.

Watch out

Safety

Mallow is a quiet market town and violent crime is rare. The real risks are wet, unlit rural roads if you walk back from a pub outside the centre, and late-night noise around the Clock House pubs on weekends.
  • Mallow is a rail interchange, not a sightseeing town: do not book three nights expecting a full programme.
  • Kerry-bound trains from Dublin often require a change at Mallow; check the connection before you book a tight itinerary.
  • Longueville House has housed refugees since 2024 and is not taking guests: check before you plan around it.
  • Rural sights (Doneraile Court, Kanturk Castle, Beenalaght stones) have no bus service worth using: without a car, drop them.
